Mash Computer Training - Media Works and the ETDP SETA
A joint project was started between Media Works and the ETDP SETA in February 2007. The project aim was to tackle illiteracy amongst the disabled. The training site identified was Mash Computer Training Center situated in the heart of Katlehong on the East Rand. The facilities at the center left much to be desired, but after a few phone calls to two of our suppliers, iVolve and Minolta, we were able to secure computers for a 20 user training center, a photo-copier and a printer.
The training commenced in April 2007 with 35 active learners, all of whom were both unemployed and disabled, suffering various physical and mental disabilities. The commitment from the owners of MCT, Adeline and Isaac Mashilane was tremendous, and they ensured that the venue was always available and in operating condition at all times. Adeline was trained as a facilitator and has done a sterling job in coaching, guiding and mentoring our ABET learners.
The project ran until December 2007, during which time 28 learners wrote and passed the IEB examinations in Communications in English and Mathematical Literacy, maintaining an 82% pass rate.
The second phase of the project commenced in July 2008, also for 35 disabled learners completing various ABET levels. Mash Computer Training Center is currently delivering the ABET training to these learners under the guidance and support of Donald Mathebula, the Media Works Project manager. To date, 34 learners have written and passed their first exam in English Communication and are currently busy with their respective Mathematical Literacy courses. This project is due to complete in October 2009.
