These are projects that have been sponsored by Media Works.
International Literacy Day 2007 - Media Works gives R500 000 back to the community
Media Works has given half a million rand back to the community by running a completion, open to all community centres in South Africa. This was done in recognition of International Adult Workers' Week and International Literacy Day. The winners were chosen from those centres that submitted the best proposals, motivating what they would do with the prize.
The prize included the following:
1. An unlimited licence to use the Media Works material within their centre.
2. The full suite of Multimedia Programmes covering ABET Levels 1 to 4 in Communications
....and Mathematical Literacy.
3. Two weeks training for their master facilitator.
4. Free support for one year.
The following 10 organisations were the lucky recipients:
1. Platreef Resources (Pty) Ltd - Mokopane
The training material will be used to further the learning centre's existing community development project, which offers ABET and agricultural training to the local community.
2. Institute for Training and Capacity Building - East London
ITEC is a community-based developmental institution that strives to build capacity and empower school communities through the provision of holistic educational programmes, addressing needs through access to skills, training and resources.
3. Pixley Ka Seme Local Municipality
The Pixley Ka Seme community centre provides training to the local community.
4. Marianpark Primary School - Durban
The Marianpark Primary School adult learning centre trains people from their local community.
5. Milnerton Library Adult Learners Centre - Cape Town
The Milnerton library Adult Learners Project is a project run from the Library by the staff and the Friends of the Milnerton Library. The project aims to teach disadvantaged adults in the community, the basic skills of reading and writing and how to communicate successfully in English. The project started in February 2000 and mushroomed quickly beyond our expectations. In the last 3 years, we have had more than 140. The ABET material and multimedia programmes were donated by Media Works.
6. St Agnes Church - Kloof
This Ministry, to those less fortunate outside of the church, is a collection of activities that have been part of St Agnes for many decades such as the Employment Bureau and training and others.
7. Sijonga-Phambili Community Learning Centre - Cape Town
The Sijonga-Phambili Community Learning Centre (CLC) was established in September 1995 in response to a need for and educational facility for previously-disadvantaged adults in the Hout Bay are. Sijonga-Phambili received a donation of R50 000 in the form of material, software and training for their facilitators.
In March 2009 Sijonga-Phambili received an upgrade to the latest version of the Media Works material, Accelerate, as well as material for Life Orientation, Human & Social Sciences, Xhosa and Afrikaans. All costs for the upgrades and additional materials were borne by Media Works.
8. Kliptown Employment & Skills Centre - Eldorado Park
Kliptown is part of Soweto in Johannesburg. It is an informal settlement of some 2700 shaks with a density of over 70 houses per hectare. This skills centre provides much needed training to the local community.
9. The Quest School for children with Autism - Port Elizabeth
The Quest School for children with Autism, based in Port Elizabeth, has received a R50 000 donation in the form of an interactive, multimedia computer-aided literacy programme that will be used to teach its autistic pupils basic literacy and numeracy skills. The programme was developed by adult education specialist Media Works primarily for adult literacy education. However, recent studies have shown how autistic children have greatly benefited from multimedia educational tools, such as the Media Works programme.
