Adult Learner Heads to Nursing College

An abalone farm worker who participated in a workplace adult education and training programme will be heading to Nursing College this year. 

HIK Abalone Farm worker, Siyasanga Ngqayimbana, started working at the farm in 2009.  The literacy and numeracy programme, provided by training specialists Media Works and funded by the AgriSETA, was available to all employees on the farm.

“I decided to join the programme to improve my English,” says Siyasanga.  “At that stage I had no idea where it would lead.  I just knew that an opportunity was being offered to me and that I should take it.”

Siyasanga worked hard, attending the training for several hours per week, and achieved certificates in both learning areas.  In 2011 he was nominated for an AgriSETA Excellence Award and won in the category Best Performing ABET learner.  “I attended the Awards ceremony in Johannesburg and it was an experience I will never forget.  It was the first time I had been amongst high profile people and it made a huge impression on me.  I gained confidence and I realised that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to.”

It had been Siyasanga’s dream to enter the medical profession in order to help others.  “When I returned to Cape Town, I decided to apply to Nursing College.  My intention is to complete my Nursing Degree and, one day, to become a doctor. I know that it won’t be easy but I believe that I now have the skills to make it happen. ”

Siyasanga hopes that sharing his story will inspire others to take up learning opportunities.  “I am proof that anyone can achieve their goals.  I am so grateful to all those who have helped me along the way.  When a door opens up for you, step through it.  You never know what will be waiting on the other side.”
