Maryna Smith is a Briquetting Plant Supervisor at Vergenoeg Mining Company in Rust De Winter. Having experienced the benefits of Adult Education firsthand, Maryna would encourage all adults to pursue their dreams; “I want to make all adults aware that there are opportunities in education. One does not need to be limited by not having a matric certificate.” This is her story.
Growing up in Orkney, North West Province, Maryna left school after completing Grade 11. She started her career as an Administration Clerk at Johannesburg Hospital in 1991 where her role involved data capturing, registration of patients and setting appointments for her superiors.
In February 2011 Maryna joined Vergenoeg Mining Company as a Junior Plant Attendant. The mine introduced the Media Works Accelerate Program in 2012 and Maryna completed AET Levels 2 and 3 in Maths as well as AET Levels 3 and 4 in English. After starting her training, she was promoted to Plant Operator, a position she held until October 2015 when she was once again promoted to her current position.
In 2014 Maryna completed Foundational Learning Competence (FLC) in English. Her goal is to complete AET Level 4 in Maths before going on to the FLC in Maths. While Maryna has benefited from the range of Adult Education and Training she has received, she values the FLC training the most; “One can still be that artisan they have always dreamt of being, especially after completing FLC.”
The training has enabled Maryna to not only progress in her career but to enjoy the tasks her role requires of her even more.
“I grew up in an Afrikaans speaking society, but after completing English, I can now write a report, write agendas and minutes of a meetings. To date, I enjoy these aspects of my job the most and find them most interesting.”
We have no doubt that Maryna will continue to flourish as she expands her skills base and achieves the goals that she has set for herself. We are thankful that we are able to play a small role in her development.
